About Florida

Florida hunting is a private-land game. Timber companies and cattle operations hold most of the good ground, and the pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and palmetto scrub they lease out carry white-tailed deer, wild hogs, and the Osceola turkey, a bird that lives nowhere else on earth. The warm climate keeps the calendar full: while northern states shut down for winter, Florida clubs are still hunting, burning, and planting almost year-round.

The Panhandle, from Pensacola across to Tallahassee, is timber country, long stretches of managed pine broken by national forest, with private parcels leased out to clubs that take deer management seriously and grow mature bucks to prove it. Drop south into Central Florida and the ground changes to cattle ranches and ag fields around the Kissimmee River Basin, where hog hunting is a daily fact of ranch life and deer and turkey round out the ledger. Nearly all of it is privately held, which makes a club or lease less a luxury than the price of entry.

South Florida is another country entirely: cypress hammocks, sawgrass prairie, wetlands that swallow a truck. Public access down here is thin, the ecosystems are sensitive and the good ground is fenced, but private leases along the Everglades' edges and on the big ranches hold hogs in numbers, with the occasional exotic on private preserves. Across the state, the timber and agricultural industries lease out vast tracts, and that arrangement is the backbone of Florida hunting: managed habitat, exclusive rights, and a hunt you can count on instead of gambling on pressured public ground.

    All individuals hunting in Florida, regardless of land ownership, must possess a valid Florida hunting license. This license is required for residents and non-residents alike, with different fee structures for each. Specific endorsements or permits may also be required for certain game species.

When to go

Season by season in Florida

Spring (March-May)

Spring belongs to the Osceola turkey, the season club calendars are built around. Between hunts, the land work starts: prescribed burns run through the pines and food plots get turned for fall.

Summer (June-August)

Hogs don't take the summer off, and on private leases neither do the hunters chasing them. The heat is also when the fall gets made: scouting, stand repair, and habitat work done in June pay out in November.

Fall (September-November)

White-tailed deer season opens and the clubs fill up, this is the year's main event. Dove and teal arrive with the early migratory seasons, giving leased ground a second reason to be busy.

Winter (December-February)

General gun deer season carries deep into winter, often running through late January. Ducks work the private ponds and marshes, small game fills the slow mornings, and members hunt while the rest of the country waits for spring.
