About Georgia

Georgia is lease country. From the Appalachian foothills in the north down through the pine flats of the Coastal Plain, the state runs on private hunting ground: deer camps, timber-company tracts, family land let out to a handful of members. Long seasons and heavy game populations, white-tailed deer and wild turkey above all, keep demand for that ground high. Harvests stay sustainable because somebody is paying attention, year after year.

The land itself decides how you hunt. In the northern Piedmont, rolling hills and mixed pine-hardwood forest reward still-hunters and stand hunters working oak ridges for deer and turkey. Drop south into the Coastal Plain and the country opens up: planted pines in long rows, agricultural fields, and hardwood bottoms along big rivers like the Altamaha and Ocmulgee where the deer hunting gets serious. Near the coast and around Lake Seminole, leased wetland ground adds waterfowl to a member's calendar.

Private land management is old habit in Georgia, and it shows. Food plots, timber stand improvement, and deliberate habitat work are standard on well-run leases, and that investment shows up in the game. Options span the whole range: a bare-bones lease that's nothing but gate keys and an honor board, up to full clubs with lodging, guides, and a social calendar. Towns like Albany and Statesboro sit at the center of that hunting economy, and a hunter shopping for a spot will find plenty to compare.

Species-wise, the state spreads its wealth. White-tailed deer are everywhere, mountain ridge to coastal marsh, with strong numbers in every region. Wild turkey do best in the mixed forests of the Piedmont and upper Coastal Plain. When to go

Season by season in Georgia

Spring

Spring means gobblers working the managed pine and hardwood tracts, the season most club calendars are built around. It's also when the drip torches come out for prescribed burns and the food plot ground gets turned.

Summer

Summer is camp maintenance and homework: stands and trails repaired, cameras out, warm-season plots and mineral sites in. The clubs that scout in August tend to be the ones dragging deer in November.

Fall

Deer season opens and the camps fill up. Archery leads into firearms, and on most Georgia leases a hog is fair game any time one crosses the plot, a second season running inside the first.

Winter

Late-season deer hunting runs into winter, and leased marsh and wetland ground comes into its own for waterfowl. Once the seasons close, clubs tally the harvest and start arguing over next year's habitat projects.
